Applied Specialties has many proprietary formulations for scale control in boiler systems, each designed for specific water or operating conditions. Some products prevent mineral scale in boiler systems by chelating, or tying up calcium and magnesium hardness. Others provide phosphates and polymers which, when added to boiler feedwater, cause the formation of non-adherent calcium sludge. Still others, contain polymeric sludge conditions to fluidize remaining suspended matter-- making it non-adherent to heat transfer surfaces. The matter is then removed by blowdown.
